The Republican Women Leaders of Calvert (RWLC) currently has 79 members (55 full and 24 associate members). 2007 has been an exciting and busy year.
Our guest speakers have included the Maryland House of Delegates Minority Leader, Tony O’Donnell; State Senator Janet Greenip (Anne Arundel County); Calvert County Commissioner Linda Kelley; Calvert County Board of Education Chair Robert Gray; and Political Consultant Kevin Igoe.
Our members received training as voter registrars at our May meeting and have actively participated in registering voters in Calvert County this Summer at events such as the County Fair and Bay Fest. We also assisted with the Calvert County Republican Central Committee effort to send letters of welcome to new home owners in Calvert County and to encourage them to register to vote.
This year’s RWLC community service activities included donating funds to send soccer balls to the troops in Iraq; donating books to the Prince Frederick Library as part of the Mamie Eisenhower Literacy Project and contributing funds to the Laura Bush Gulf-Coast Library Initiative. We participated in welcoming home the troops at BWI; contributing funds to help a fifth grade student with tuition for the Student Ambassador Program under the Dwight D. Eisenhower People-to-People Program; and contributed funds and participated in the events to help eight Mongolian Women visit the United States and learn about our democracy.
RWLC actively worked for passage of “Jessica’s Law” to protect children from sexual predators and for passage of legislation to ensure a paper trail for voting systems.
During 2006 RWLC members dedicated over 17,000 volunteer hours to Federation and election activities. Our members worked hard to elect Republicans to national, state, and local offices--as candidates, campaign managers, and volunteers. We are delighted that Calvert County voters re-elected Tony O’Donnell as the Delegate for Legislative District 29C, County Commissioners Susan Shaw, Linda Kelley and Jerry Clark, Calvert County Treasurer Nova Tracy Soper and Sheriff Mike Evans. Equally exciting, voters elected Laura Martin the first woman State’s Attorney in Calvert County. We were also pleased that two RWLC members were elected to the Calvert County Central Committee, Cynthia Steuart and Laura Jessup.
RWLC Founding President, Patt Parker, is currently the President of the Maryland Federation of Republican Women and founding member Joyce Lyons Terhes is Maryland’s National Committeewoman.

A Message from Our President Welcome to the Republican Women Leaders of Calvert website! The Republican Women Leaders of Calvert (RWLC) is a young club, just three years old. We invite all women to join and participate in our club’s activities. Our meetings are informative, educational, and politically focused. We even manage to have fun! In August we joined with our Sister Federated Club the Republican Women of Calvert County and the Calvert County Republican Club in coordination with the Calvert County Republican Central Committee to hold the first Republican Candidates Forum in Calvert County. It was an outstanding event that brought out 300 people on a Thursday evening in August. This Forum provided voters with an opportunity to meet Republican candidates face-to-face, ask questions and take home literature before deciding their votes for the Primary. In 2006 guest speakers to RWLC meetings included: February – The Honorable Mike Evans, Calvert County Sheriff March – The Honorable Audrey Scott, Secretary for State Planning for Maryland April – The Honorable Linda Kelly, County Commissioner May – Candidate Ron Miller and Betty Fowler Jones, President of the Board of Elections for Calvert County June – The Honorable Thomas McKay, Chairman of the County Commissions for St. Mary’s County and candidate for the Maryland Senate in District 29, and House of Delegates Minority Whip, Anthony J. History In January of 2003, a group of women met to discuss the possibility of forming a women’s Republican club in the Northern area of Calvert County. After several discussions with women who wanted a club that met in the evening, the Republican Women Leaders of Calvert began. The club would be under the auspices of the Maryland Federation of Republican Women (MFRW) and the National Federation of Republican Women (NFRW).
The initial meeting establishing the Republican Women Leaders of Calvert (RWLC) brought together ladies from a number of areas in Calvert as well as neighboring Southern Anne Arundel, and in March of 2003, the RWLC began. Founding members voted Patt Parker, President, Judy MacWilliams, Vice President, and Gayle Blizzard, Secretary/Treasurer. The primary goal of the Club is to broaden the understanding of Republican aims in government, to increase the number of women registered in the Republican Party, and unite their efforts along party lines.
The Club submitted the necessary credentials to the Maryland Federation of Republican Women and the National Federation of Republican Women; the Republican Women Leaders of Calvert received its official charter in April 2003.
In May 2004, the RWLC members voted to increase their club officers and voted in a Corresponding Secretary, Recording Secretary and Treasurer. Elections were held and the following officers installed: Judy MacWilliams, President, Della Stull, Vice President, Catherine Grasso, Recording Secretary, Heather Allman, Corresponding Secretary and Nellie Ruehle, Treasurer.
