RWLC  MEETING
OCTOBER 1, 2007

The regular meeting of the Republican Women Leaders of Calvert was held on Monday, October 1, in the meeting room of the new Springhill Suites in Prince Frederick.

We were very honored to have as our Guest Speaker the Minority Leader of the Maryland House of Delegates, Tony O'Donnell.  Tony represents, not only Calvert and St. Mary's Counties, but all of Maryland as Minority Leader.  He discussed the many important issues are facing Maryland and the General Assembly in the coming months including the structural deficit, taxes--all kinds of possible tax increases- and  slots.

The Governor and the Democrats are pounding the tax increase drum, Minority Leader O'Donnell and the Republicans are saying we can tighten our belt by slowing the rate of growth of the budget and avoid tax increases. If slots are to be a part of the picture they should be limited and the licenses should be awarded by competitive fair-market auction process to ensure fairness and maximize ongoing revenues to the State.

Minority Leader O'Donnell said the Governor "had an opportunity to deal with the structural deficit head-on during the 2007 regular session", but "he chose instead to make no meaningful restraints in spending and to raid every savings account available to him.  Now he has chosen to continue the reckless spending that created this structural deficit and pay for it by raiding the savings accounts of Maryland's taxpayers."

Mr. O'Donnell said he thought these issues should not be considered in a "get-it done-quick Special Session.  There needs to be a transparent public review and debate of these significant policy changes.

4TH ANNUAL WINE TASTING AND AUCTION

Thanks too, to Frank Grasso who added to the "muscle power" during the set up and decoration operation.  The food was delicious and tastefully arranged--thank you so much to all the members who prepared the scrumptious goodies, and thanks to Estelle Arscott who headed the Food Committee and her able assistants Anita Brown and Della Stull. The Auction items were fun, political and different--thank you June Lusby who headed the Auction and thanks to all the members who contributed the auction items.  Our program was very professional and beautiful -- thank you Judy MacWilliams and we added a multi media presentation thanks to Bob Arscott and his video and computer talents.  Thanks to our sponsors and advertisers for their support too!  A big "thank you" to Jerry Clark and Port of Call Liquors for hosting the wine tasting.  Their support is greatly appreciated. And, certainly thanks to our able Auctioneers Tony O'Donnell and George Owings.  They always add color and humor to the auction.  Our  sincere thanks too, to our Welcoming Committee, Darcey Clark, Catherine Grasso, Suzann Humphrey, Joanie Martin and Marilyn Quinn for manning the check in and "check out" and seeing that everyone got their complementary wine glass and program and bidding number.    We had an excellent display of the history scrapbooks and awards won by RWLC thanks to Sharon Fossett and Mary Igoe--Memories-wonderful memories!

Adding music and a dance exhibition was exciting and even if you didn't dance, and many did, the music was upbeat and enjoyable.   I thought it was a marvelous = evening.  I hope all of you enjoyed it.
